About Daming Ancient City
The visible city and the Song-period archaeological site are several kilometres apart. At the present city's Tiren East Gate, the walls and barbican remains explain a layered defensive system, with the moat outside and an enclosed approach guarding the gate. Recent conservation work has included repairs to the Ming-Qing city walls.
Flood prevention also shaped the city's layout. Local heritage officials describe a raised centre with land sloping towards the sides and large depressions in its four corners, intended to carry and collect water. Inside the walls, lanes, old trees, steles and traditional food shops give the city a lived-in setting alongside the restored monuments.
