About Dapi Mountain
The Buddha and the accompanying carvings are a national key cultural heritage protection unit, and Xinhua describes the figure as a representative example in the development of Buddhist sculpture in China. The Hebi municipal government's own profile of the city calls the Pishan stone Buddha the earliest in the country and the largest in northern China.
The carvings have suffered from long exposure. Weathering and human activity have left surface powdering and flaking, cracking of the stone, hollowing behind the surface, water seepage, dissolution, salt damage and microbial growth, and in March 2025 Xun County began a comprehensive conservation and restoration project on the Buddha and the carvings together with the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage. The mountain is registered by the province as a 4A scenic area, one of five in Hebi, and has been developed jointly with the Xunxian old town, in a county that is a national famous historic and cultural city.
What to look for
- The cliff-carved Buddha itself, cut into the rock of the hill and listed as a national key cultural heritage protection unit.
- The wider body of stone carvings on the hill, which are protected together with the Buddha as one unit.
- The condition of the stone, which the conservation project is addressing: powdering and flaking of the surface, cracks, hollowing, seepage and salt damage.
- The pairing of the hill with the Xunxian old town, which the city has promoted together as a single destination.
