About Zhoukou Guandi Temple

The complex was financed by Shanxi and Shaanxi merchants living at Zhoujiakou, the river port that by the Qianlong era had become the main land-and-water trading hub of south-eastern Henan. Building began in 1693 and, after repeated enlargements under the Yongzheng, Qianlong, Jiaqing and Daoguang emperors, was completed in 1852, some 160 years later. It occupies roughly 36,000 square metres in three courtyards laid out in palace style, with more than 140 surviving bays of halls, galleries and pavilions. The central axis runs south to north through the mountain gate, a pair of iron flagpoles, the offering hall, main hall, opera stage, worship hall and Chunqiu Pavilion, while side halls to figures such as the Medicine King, the Kitchen God and the God of Wealth flank the front courtyard.

The buildings are known for their wood, stone and brick carving, painted decoration and ironwork, much of it in auspicious motifs typical of the mid-to-late Qing. The State Council listed the temple as a national key cultural heritage site in 1996; it also operates as a national grade-III museum and a AAAA-rated scenic area, and in 2019 it was included among the eight sites of a joint 'Guan Sheng cultural relics' World Heritage nomination approved by the National Cultural Heritage Administration.

What to look for

  • The iron flagpoles of 1797, donated by Shaanxi merchants of the Tianping guild from Dali, Chaoyi and Chengcheng, standing on hexagonal stone and cast-iron bases
  • The 1765 stone memorial archway on the moon terrace, four columns and three roofed bays with a main bay 7.85 metres high
  • The main hall of 1693, the earliest building on the site, five bays wide under a yellow glazed-tile roof
  • Chunqiu Pavilion of 1800, the principal building, raised on a platform with a surrounding gallery and peacock-blue glazed tiles, whose evening glow counts among Zhoukou's traditional eight views
  • The 1838 stele pavilion, whose 1837 rebuilding stele lists the names and contributions of more than 320 Zhoukou merchant firms
