About Huilong Tianjie Mountain
The area takes in the Huilong Grand Canyon, a broad basin ringed by ravines and red-rock gorges with sheer thousand-foot drops, and ridges over which cloud seas gather. Among its cultural features is Laoyeding, a Daoist site on the mountain, known through a paired saying that sets the 'golden summit' of Wudang in the south against the 'iron summit' of Huilong in the north. The county government counts more than a hundred distinct natural, cultural and revolutionary-history features within the boundary.
The name Huilong also belongs to the village below the cliffs, and the road that serves it is part of what people come to see. It climbs cliffs between roughly 800 and 1,700 metres. Until it was built, more than two hundred villagers reached the outside only by ladder-like paths pinned to the rock. From 1997 the village party secretary Zhang Rongsuo led more than 150 people over three years to cut an eight-kilometre switchback road and a 1,000-metre S-shaped tunnel into the cliff face. The village now works on revolutionary-history, cultural and ecological tourism and grows forsythia, and is counted within the Xinxiang South Taihang resort district.
