The grounds are laid out with surviving listed relics as their fixed points: the Wenfeng Pagoda, the Confucius Temple, the Tuoling Palace and the Siyanjing well. Between and around them the quarter deliberately combines old fabric with new building, so a visitor should not assume that a given hall or street front is historic. Laocheng District as a whole is a city district where the old Luoyang townscape is relatively well preserved, and the city has issued conservation and detailed construction plans for the East, West and South Corner historic quarter with the stated aim of recovering the old street grid, described locally as nine streets, eighteen lanes and seventy-two alleys.

In practice the place functions as an evening destination. It sits within a night-economy circuit that also takes in the Tianxin cultural industry park, the Sui and Tang city heritage park, the historic quarter, the Shizijie night market and Minzhu Street, and the district promotes it under a theme of dreaming of the Sui and Tang at Luoyi. Tang-style market and immersive programming is developed here, and wearing Han-style dress while walking the grounds has become a characteristic thing to do.

What to look for

• The Wenfeng Pagoda, the subject of an evening light show.
• The Confucius Temple inside the grounds, one of the listed relics used as a fixed point in the layout.
• The Tuoling Palace, another of the protected buildings the plan is organised around.
• The Siyanjing well, the fourth of the named protected relics on the site.
• The Xintan pool and the old moat watercourse, which are used as the thread linking the separate relics.
