About Yuxi Grand Canyon
Yuxi Grand Canyon (豫西大峡谷), the grand canyon of western Henan, follows the Hanchuanyu River (汉川峪河) through Guandaokou Town (官道口镇) in Lushi County (卢氏县), Sanmenxia (三门峡), in the border region where Henan, Shaanxi and Shanxi meet.
The gorge runs east to west for more than 30 km and is 30 to 50 m across. At its deepest the floor lies 200 m down, and the peaks on either side rise to 1,372 m above sea level. The gorge holds 99 waterfalls of various sizes and more than 300 pools. The biggest fall, Dazongtan Waterfall (大淙潭瀑布), drops about 40 m. The whole scenic area covers 58 km², and it has been a national AAAA tourist attraction (国家4A级旅游景区) since 2006.
Visitors can raft through the gorge in rubber boats. The Lushi County government gives the rafting channel as 6 km long with an overall drop of 210 m, and lists five kinds of run on it: underground-river, cave, waterfall, canyon and spinning rafting.
The scenic area also takes in the Longquan Gully (龙泉沟) primeval forest area, a place of layered peaks and old climbing vines where, according to the operator, wild golden pheasants, squirrels and deer roam. The operator, Lushi Yuxi Grand Canyon Tourism Development Co. (卢氏豫西大峡谷旅游开发有限公司), presents the canyon as a traditional Chinese medicine wellness destination, drawing on the health-preservation institute of the Henan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (河南中医学院), and divides it into three wellness zones: a central service zone, a sports zone and a forest zone.
