About Tai Hang Neighbourhood
Tai Hang is a neighbourhood near Causeway Bay whose streets are strongly associated with the Tai Hang Fire Dragon tradition. It offers a smaller-scale setting for exploring local culture than the nearby major shopping streets. The neighbourhood visit and the annual festival are related experiences, but they are not interchangeable.
The fire dragon dance is a recognised intangible cultural heritage tradition in which a long dragon covered with burning incense is carried through the streets. Community organisation and collective participation are central to the event. Outside the festival, the neighbourhood’s heritage interpretation provides a way to understand that tradition without expecting a performance.
Walk the side streets with attention to the ordinary uses of the buildings and the places connected with community memory. The City in Time interpretation can help compare historical views with the present streetscape. During a festival visit, follow the announced viewing areas and leave space for performers, residents and emergency access; a quiet daytime route can become a very different environment.
What to look for
- Connect the streets with the community’s fire dragon tradition.
