About Blue House Cluster
The Blue House Cluster in Wan Chai brings together the Blue, Yellow and Orange Houses around Stone Nullah Lane and adjoining streets. The coloured facades are immediately recognisable, but the buildings’ value also lies in their connection with neighbourhood life. They are a heritage setting with an ongoing community presence.
The Blue House is a four-storey pre-war tong lau building dating from the 1920s, with shops below and homes above. Its balconies and compact mixed-use arrangement show a familiar pattern in older Hong Kong streets. The Hong Kong House of Stories on the ground floor provides cultural interpretation through exhibitions and activities.
Look beyond the blue paint to the relationship between street-level premises, upper floors and balconies. The neighbouring buildings help explain the cluster as a group rather than a single colourful wall. Read the community interpretation where available, and keep a respectful distance from private windows and residential entrances. Conservation here concerns people and use as well as the appearance of a facade.
