About M+ Museum
M+ is a museum of visual culture in the West Kowloon Cultural District. Its scope includes visual art, design, architecture and moving images, with Hong Kong providing an important perspective on twentieth- and twenty-first-century culture. A visit can therefore move between a painting, a designed object, an architectural model and a film rather than following one medium alone.
The building, designed by Herzog & de Meuron with TFP Farrells and Arup, combines a broad podium with a slender tower. Its relationship to the harbour is part of the experience: the exterior media facade presents another kind of image to the city, while public circulation connects the museum to its waterfront setting. Collection displays and temporary exhibitions change over time.
Choose one exhibition or theme to explore carefully before adding other galleries. Comparing an object’s purpose with its material and historical context is especially rewarding here. For moving-image works, allow enough time to understand their duration instead of judging them from a brief glimpse. The architecture can then become a second subject as you move between galleries and outdoor viewpoints.
