About Hankou Riverside Park
The Yangtze crosses the Wuhan urban area from south-west to north-east, and the current along the Hankou bank is comparatively gentle, so sediment carried from upstream has settled here over time and built a riverside flat 150 to 420 metres wide, some 7,000 metres long and about two square kilometres in area. The park on it is entirely man-made. It grew out of the works at the Longwangmiao danger section; the first phase opened on 1 October 2002, and second and third phases followed over the next few years. The design answers the river's swing between seasons: three tiers of waterside terrace are set at heights matched to winter, spring and autumn, and summer levels, so that the same ground works as flood defence and as a place to walk. In August 2024 the Wuhan bureau of natural resources and urban-rural construction published its first list of ten geological heritage sites in the city and included the Hankou riverside, classing it as a river landscape belt; the designated stretch runs along Yanjiang Avenue from the Erqi Yangtze River Bridge to the Wuhan Yangtze River Tunnel.
The riverside forms part of Wuhan's Hundred-li Yangtze Ecological Corridor, launched in 2020 as a programme of sixteen projects and completed end to end in 2025. Before 2016 sand yards and working wharves lined these banks, and the city's clean-up of port and shoreline use cleared the way for the parks. Along the whole Wuhan riverside 63 floodgates have been rebuilt, with assembled aluminium-alloy floodwalls at every riverside gate inside the Third Ring Road, and the planting was drawn from 156 tree and shrub species chosen for their ability to survive submergence. The Hankou stretch holds the Crossing the Yangtze Museum, and the linked riversides tie the bank to the Yellow Crane Tower and Qingchuan Pavilion across the water.
