About Honghu Lake Eco-Tourism Area
The area is built on the open water of Honghu, described locally as the hundred-li lake, and on the character of the surrounding watery lowland. It brings together natural scenery, ecological protection, aquatic resources and modern agriculture with eco-tourism, water recreation and revolutionary-tradition education, and is listed among the hundred national classic red tourism scenic areas and among China's first batch of agricultural tourism demonstration sites. Its character changes sharply through the year: fishing sails in spring, red lotus flowers over green leaves in summer, sweet lotus seeds and water chestnuts with fish and crabs in autumn, and reeds in seed with massed birds in winter. The lake-set staging of Honghu Chijiedui and the opera Kan Tianxia Laoku Renmin Dou Jiefang belong to the area's programme.
The name needs care. Honghu also has a separate and larger Honghu Wetland Ecological Tourism Area on the lake's east shore, covering more than 4,400 mu and rated 4A, with its own hotel, eco-park, tourism port, party history centre and greenway; that is a different place from this one. Qujiawan itself is associated with the revolutionaries He Long and Zhou Yiqun, and the Qujiawan Xiang-E-Xi revolutionary base site there is again a separate 3A area, a national key cultural relics protection unit listed in the third national batch on 13 January 1988, holding 39 revolutionary buildings and remains. The base site and the ecological tourism area both lie about 50 kilometres from the Honghu city centre.
