Huangshi National Mine Park 黄石国家矿山公园

Huangshi Guojia Kuangshan Gongyuan

Huangshi National Mine Park (黄石国家矿山公园) occupies the worked-out open pit and reclaimed slopes of the Daye Iron Mine in Tieshan District, Huangshi, in eastern Hubei. It was the first national mine park established in China and is presented as an industrial-heritage site rather than a natural landscape.

About Huangshi National Mine Park

The park covers an area of 23.2 square kilometres, with the enclosed park proper accounting for about 3,600 mu. Its central feature is the Mining and Smelting Grand Canyon, the abandoned open pit, which the municipal government describes as roughly 2,200 metres east to west and 550 metres north to south, with a pit-mouth area of 1.08 million square metres and a maximum vertical drop of 444 metres. The site also holds a hard-rock reclamation forest, given as 3.66 million square metres and described by the city as the largest of its kind in Asia.

The site carries a documented modern political history alongside its industrial one: Mao Zedong inspected the east open-pit working of the Daye Iron Mine on 15 September 1958, and a statue of him 9.15 metres high and weighing 58 tonnes now stands on Sunrise in the East Square at the main entrance. The park opened to visitors on 22 April 2007, was rated a national AAAA scenic area in February 2010, entered the first list of protected Chinese industrial heritage in January 2018, and has been placed on China's tentative list for World Cultural Heritage. Huangshi also counts it as the province's second national industrial-tourism demonstration site after the Three Gorges Dam.
