About Taohuachong Forest Park
The park covers about 30 square kilometres at an average elevation above 1,200 metres, with its main peak reaching roughly 1,700 metres, second only to Tiantangzhai. It sits against the provincial boundary: the Yaoluoping nature reserve in Anhui lies immediately north, Wujiashan forest park to the west, the Honghua and Zhanhe reservoirs to the south and the ecological village of Guizhishan to the east. Yingshan County itself, 1,449 square kilometres on the southern flank of Tiantangzhai, has long been described as a corridor between Hubei and Anhui and between the Yangtze and Huai drainages.
The woodland is dense and varied enough for the park to be described as a plant gene pool of the Dabie Mountains, with ginkgo, the Dabie Mountain five-needle pine and Magnolia sieboldii among its rarer trees. More than forty nationally protected animal species have been recorded, including the Chinese giant salamander, pangolin, musk deer, leopard and masked palm civet. Over twenty named viewpoints and water features are distributed through the park, and the former home of Bi Sheng, the Northern Song inventor of movable-type printing and a native of this county, lies just to the south-east of it.
What to look for
- The main summit of the park, at roughly 1,700 metres the second highest point of the Dabie range after Tiantangzhai
- Rare trees of the Dabie woodland: ginkgo, the Dabie Mountain five-needle pine and Magnolia sieboldii
- Named features within the park such as Heilongtan, the Maoping river, Waxiepai, Xiangbi Wanshui and Miaolianfeng
- The northern edge of the park, which runs up against the Yaoluoping nature reserve across the boundary in Anhui
- The site of Bi Sheng's former home, just south-east of the park in his native Yingshan County
