About Wuhan University Campus
The university traces its origin to the Ziqiang Xuetang, founded in 1893 on a memorial submitted by Zhang Zhidong, Viceroy of Huguang, and took the name National Wuhan University in 1928 as one of modern China's first national universities. By 1946 it taught across six colleges covering arts, law, science, engineering, agriculture and medicine, and in 2000 it merged with Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping and Hubei Medical University to form the present institution. Luojia Hill has a long roll of people associated with it: Zhou Enlai, Dong Biwu, Chen Tanqiu and Luo Ronghuan spent time here, and Gu Hongming, Zhu Kezhen, Li Siguang, Wen Yiduo, Yu Dafu, Ye Shengtao and Li Da taught or wrote here.
The campus wraps around the water of East Lake and climbs the hills behind it. Twenty-six of its early buildings, a palace-style group that combines Chinese and Western elements, are listed together as a national key cultural heritage site, which the State Council published in 2001 in the fifth national batch. The group was completely planned and designed as a single scheme and built within a relatively short period. Its stated design concept was to be practical, sturdy, economical and handsome under a traditional Chinese exterior, and its layout principles were axial symmetry, an ordered relation of main and subordinate parts, a central hall and tall blocks at the four corners. The university department responsible for cultural-heritage protection catalogues them individually, from the old National Wuhan University memorial gateway and the water tower to the Songqing Gymnasium and the former residences of Li Da, Guo Moruo and Zhou Enlai. This is a working university, so the protected buildings sit among teaching and residential blocks in daily use.
