About Wuling Night City
The district opened on the evening of 30 December 2023 with the staging of a large opera scene drama, 'Wuling Liyuan Qing'. It is a joint project of the Shiyan Culture, Tourism and Sports Investment Development Group and the Hubei Changhe Capital Operation Group, both state-owned platforms, which set out to redevelop Xiguan Street with Shan'erhuang opera culture as its core, food as its main trade and the night-time economy as its point of entry. One long street runs through the site, lined with pseudo-antique buildings, and the plan is divided into three themes pairing the old street with the Wuling name, opera with food, and contemporary Chinese style with traditional arts.
The signature element is a walk-through performance: seven stages along the National Essence Food Street carry an immersive opera drama following two lead characters, Wuyang and Jiuling, which runs to roughly two hours if followed from beginning to end. The district has since expanded. A Guangying, or Light and Shadow, Street opened on 15 August 2025 with four themed sections, a film street, a shadow-puppet street, a children's opera park and the Wuling night market, bringing in old-brand shops and intangible-heritage crafts. Hubei has listed the original opera street as a provincial night-time consumption cluster.
