About Wuxiakou Scenic Area
The Badong reach of the Wu Gorge runs for 22 kilometres, a long, deep channel of abrupt peaks and stacked ridges through which the river turns repeatedly. The scenic area planned around it covers 83.5 square kilometres, with a key zone of 24.6 square kilometres taking in Wuxiakou itself, the mountain of Damianshan, the side valley of Lianzixi and the rock called Huoyanshi. At Lianzixi, below Damianshan, the Yangtze swings through ninety degrees around Leigongshan on the north bank, a turn known locally as the first bend of the Yangtze.
The place carries a dense set of local associations. The county bureau describes Badong's culture as combining the traditions of the gorge river itself, the boat-trackers who once hauled craft upstream, the Ba people of the region, and the memory of the Northern Song statesman Kou Zhun. The Jiaoziyan platform on the heights is identified by the county as the best point from which to look down on the bend.
