Yeren Cave and Yeren Valley 野人洞与野人谷

Yeren Dong Yu Yeren Gu

Yeren Cave and Yeren Valley (野人洞与野人谷) are two linked karst sites in Yerengu Town, in the mountains south of the Fang County seat in Shiyan, Hubei. Both are graded 4A scenic areas, and their shared name refers to a local 'wild man' tradition rather than to any documented animal.

About Yeren Cave and Yeren Valley

The pair sits along National Highway 209 in the corridor between Wudangshan to the north and Shennongjia to the south, about 23 kilometres from the county town. The scenic area is centred on Qiaoshang Village, which lies between Guan Mountain and Qinglong Mountain in a gorge roughly 5 kilometres long and 1 kilometre wide. Yeren Cave is cut into Qinglong Mountain: a passage of about 1,980 metres on two levels, with stalactite formations counted locally as fifty-nine named features across five halls and five galleries, and an underground stream that keeps the cave at around 14 degrees Celsius through the year. Yeren Valley lies roughly 9 kilometres north of the cave and holds Huancai Ridge, Yeren Beach, Yeren Mansion and the Longxu Waterfall.

The 'wild man' after which both are named is presented by the county as an unresolved local mystery. Fang County adjoins Shennongjia on its southern side, and accounts of such a creature appear in the Classic of Mountains and Seas, the Fang County Gazetteer and the Yunyang Prefecture Gazetteer, with modern sighting reports concentrated in the county's Old South Mountains. No evidence for the animal is offered in these records; the name functions as a local cultural theme, and the county has built a tourism identity around it, including the naming of Yerengu Town itself.
