About Changde Museum
The displays are grouped under the theme Dexing qianzai, shi yun Changde. The permanent exhibition is History of Changde, supported by thematic displays on Changde root carving, local folk customs, notable figures from the area and the region's scenic places. The catalogued collection runs to 11,935 objects, of which 83 are graded first-class national cultural relics. The museum is a second-grade national museum and a provincial patriotic-education base, and in December 2007 it became the first museum in Hunan to admit visitors without an admission charge.
The collection's local strength lies in material from prehistoric sites in the Yuan and Li river country: chipped stone tools attributed to roughly half a million years ago, pottery from the Pengtoushan culture site of eight to nine thousand years ago, which takes its name from a Changde place name, and pottery and stone tools from the lower Zaoshi and the Tangjiagang culture sites. Bronze mirrors and lacquered wooden objects of the Chu and Han periods are also well represented. Among later holdings are the largest and best preserved Northern Song bronze mirror so far excavated in China, jade, porcelain and bronze from the Jin-dynasty tomb of Liu Hong, an excavation named one of the national top ten archaeological discoveries of its year, a Yuan ceramic pillow and Yuan gold and silver work. The museum also keeps papers, photographs and clothing connected with the 1943 Defence of Changde, donated by Yu Zhifang, daughter of the garrison commander Yu Chengwan.
