About Hunan Geological Museum
Hunan Geological Museum (湖南省地质博物馆) is a geology museum on Shanmuchong Road (杉木冲路) in Tianxin District (天心区), Changsha (长沙), owned by the Hunan Department of Natural Resources (湖南省自然资源厅).
Its roots go back to 1932, when the geologist Tian Qijuan (田奇镌) and colleagues turned a few old rooms at the Hunan Geological Survey (湖南地质调查所) into a place to display and store specimens. A geology exhibition hall was completed in Changsha in 1958, and the provincial geology and mining bureau enlarged it in 1975 and gave it the museum name. It opened formally to visitors on 1 October 1980, with eight halls whose themes ran from the evolution of the universe and of life to dinosaurs, human origins, mineral formation, rock classification and gemstones. In 1985 Wang Zhen (王震), then vice-president of China, visited and wrote out the museum name in his own hand.
The provincial government approved a move to a new site in 2002, and the present building opened on 22 April 2012. It stands on a 48,000-square-metre site with 32,000 square metres of floor space, 7,800 of them given to exhibitions, beside the Hunan Science and Technology Museum (湖南省科学技术馆), the Hunan Youth Activity Center and the Hunan Mass Art Museum. After a renovation from December 2017 to April 2019, the China Museums Association rated it a national second-grade museum in December 2020. It is also listed as a 3A-level tourist attraction.
The exhibitions are divided into six halls: Earth Mysteries, Geology and Mineral Resources, Geological Environment, Evolution of Life, Minerals and Gems, and Surveying, Mapping and Geographic Information.
