About Jiubujiang Scenic Area

The lake is man-made. A dam across the middle reaches of the You River was begun in 1958 and the dam complex was finished in February 1962, leaving a main dam and an auxiliary dam each more than 40 metres high; over 40,000 people worked on the site at the busiest point and 1,455 households, some 6,177 people, were moved out of the future basin. The impounded water has a catchment of 610 square kilometres and a total storage capacity of 300 million cubic metres, averaging about 500 metres wide and reaching 2,300 metres at its widest.

The geopark around it was assembled from karst features rather than the water alone: caves, underground rivers, sinkholes, gorges, natural bridges, waterfalls, lakes and fossil beds. Surveys inside the park have recorded 156 large and medium-sized caves, described by the provincial natural resources department as the easternmost and largest cave cluster in Hunan and in the country. In 2012 the artificial wetland formed by Jiuxian Lake was designated Jiubujiang National Wetland Park; surveys of the wetland park and its surroundings have recorded 704 species of vascular wild plants and 202 species of wild vertebrates, ten of them under national second-class protection.

What to look for

  • Jiuxian Lake itself, the reservoir impounded behind the main and auxiliary dams completed in 1962
  • The geopark museum, which presents the karst geology of the surrounding 193 square kilometres
  • Yuwang Cave, whose underground river runs for about 10 kilometres
  • Baoning Temple on the lake shore at Wujing village, Huangfengqiao town, founded in 751 during the Tang dynasty
  • Stands of southern yew, a plant under first-class national protection, among the park's woodland
