About Mengdong River Rafting
The watercourse used runs 47 kilometres in all, and the stretch the county singles out is the roughly 17 kilometres from Hanigong down to Niulu. The scenic area is credited with 108 rapids and shoals and about twenty waterfalls of varying size, with old secondary forest standing on both banks and troops of monkeys recorded along them. Named points on the route include Sanjiaoyan, Jilongmen, Yuxian gorge, Yanwangtan, Luoshuikeng, Mengsi gorge, Liyu Poudu and Sandapao, so the run is a sequence of identifiable gorges and drops rather than one continuous channel.
The name of the river is explained locally by its fierce hills, its fast water and its many caves. The byname by which the run is known, Tianxia Diyi Piao, comes from an inscription written in 1991 by the sociologist Fei Xiaotong, then eighty-one, while he was researching in the Wuling mountains; in February 2002 the phrase was registered as a Hunan provincial famous trademark. Local accounts sum up the corridor as ten li of cliff, ten li of waterfall and spring, ten li of scroll painting and ten li of cave country.
