About Yangming Mountain
The park began as a state forest farm founded in 1958, administered by Ningyuan County until Shuangpai County was created in 1969. It was approved as a provincial nature reserve in 1982, established as a national forest park by the then Ministry of Forestry in 1992, and raised to a national nature reserve by the State Council in 2009. Forest cover is 97.8 percent; surveys record more than 1,917 vascular plant species, among them 62 rare and endangered trees under national key protection such as Chinese Douglas fir, southern yew and Bretschneidera sinensis, and more than 220 wildlife species including white-necked long-tailed pheasant, forest musk deer and clouded leopard, 28 of them under national key protection.
The mid-subtropical climate is cool and damp, with a mean annual temperature of 14.2 degrees Celsius, about 1,607.5 millimetres of rain, little sunshine and a mean relative humidity of 87 percent, and the broken terrain creates strong local microclimates. The mountain has been a Buddhist pilgrimage destination since the Eastern Han period and local tradition holds that 108 temples and nunneries once stood here. In August 1934 the Red Sixth Army Corps under Ren Bishi, Wang Zhen and Xiao Ke fought its way out of encirclement here during the Long March; a memorial pavilion built by local people commemorates the passage, and in 1998 Xiao Ke wrote the park's name inscription himself.
