About Dabao'en Temple Site Museum

The Yongle emperor commissioned the expanded temple and its nine-storey glazed pagoda in 1412. Known in Europe as the Porcelain Tower of Nanjing, the pagoda became an internationally recognised image of the city before the temple and tower were destroyed during the Taiping wars. Systematic excavations in 2007–2010 underpinned the museum that opened in 2015.

The remains include the Xiangshui watercourse, Yongle and Xuande steles, and Ming water-management structures. Together they reveal the scale and formal arrangement of the temple. Digital interpretation of the lost pagoda adds a view of the vanished architecture alongside the material traces preserved on site.
