About Mount Gushan

Local historical accounts describe Gushan as a former rocky islet in the Yangtze, later surrounded by land as river sediment accumulated around it. That history helps explain the hill's striking separation from the surrounding plain.

From the Ming period onward, temples, halls and pavilions were added to the hill. Nieyun Archway, cliff inscriptions, Bugu Pavilion and Wangjiang Tower give the landscape identifiable landmarks, while local storytelling, clay chicken crafts and temple-fair traditions form part of its cultural background.

What to look for

  • Nieyun Archway and the hill's rock inscriptions.
  • Bugu Pavilion and Wangjiang Tower.
  • The isolated hill form against Jingjiang's surrounding plain.
