About Hubushan Historic Residences
The houses step with the slope, bringing together northern courtyard forms and southern architectural detail. The Yu family came from Huizhou, the Zhai family from Shanxi and the Zheng family from the Suzhou region; their residences show how merchants from different places shaped the same neighbourhood.
The conservation institution uses the historic buildings to present domestic life as well as architecture. Displays include household objects, building components, marriage customs, seasonal festivals and local crafts, giving the courtyards a social history beyond their walls and rooflines.
What to look for
- The Yu, Zhai and Zheng courtyards and their contrasting architectural influences.
