About Qingjiangpu Li Canal
Chen Xuan developed the Qingjiangpu channel in 1415 to improve the passage of grain boats towards the north. Its sluices reduced the need to haul boats across embankments, and commerce grew along the banks. A new navigation channel opened in 1959, allowing the older urban canal to take on a stronger cultural and recreational role.
Qingjiang Sluice recalls the water-control system that sustained canal traffic. On Zhongzhou Island, the present Qingjiangpu Tower was designed as part of the 2003 Zhongzhou Park project. The south-bank Chen–Pan shrine, relocated and rebuilt to interpret the work of Chen Xuan and Pan Jixun, adds another perspective on the city's relationship with water.
