About Yihe Road Mansion District
The 1929 Capital Plan set aside a first-class residential district for villas and garden houses, with Yihe Road at its centre by 1933. Designs and colours required approval, and rules governed building height, walls and open space. Buildings could occupy no more than half of their plots, giving gardens and courtyards a defining role.
Spanish, Dutch, British and European and American modern house designs of the period appear within the district. Conservation has sought to preserve the original buildings and courtyard pattern, so the architectural interest lies both in individual facades and in the spacing of houses, gardens and boundary walls along the streets.
What to look for
- The varied European-influenced garden-house facades
- The relationship between villas, garden plots and boundary walls
