About Bajing Terrace

Bajing Terrace (八境台) is a three-storey tower on the northeast corner of the old city wall of Ganzhou (赣州), in Zhanggong District (章贡区), Jiangxi. Below it the Zhang (章江) and Gong (贡江) rivers meet and become the Gan River (赣江).

The first building went up in the Jiayou reign of the Northern Song (1056–1063), under Kong Zonghan (孔宗翰), prefect of Qianzhou (虔州). Its name means "terrace of the eight views": from the top the eight scenes of Ganzhou (赣州八景) can all be seen. According to the Ganzhou city government, Kong had the views painted as the Eight Views of Qianzhou (虔州八境图), and later, in Mizhou (密州) in Shandong, asked the poet Su Dongpo (苏东坡) to write eight poems to go with the pictures; the city government counts this as the first "eight views" set in Chinese history.

The early tower was timber and burned down several times. The present one, a reinforced-concrete building in the old style, was begun in 1984 and finished in 1987; the Ganzhou city government gives its height as 28 m and describes it as Song-style. Ganzhou listed it as a municipal protected site in 1983. The grounds around it were laid out as Bajing Park (八境公园) in 1955 and cover 7.6 ha, 5.5 ha of it water.

The terrace stands on Ganzhou's brick city wall, which dates from the Northern Song and averages 7 m in height; the stretch from the East Gate past Bajing Terrace to the West Gate runs 3.6 km. In the Xianfeng reign, to hold off the Taiping army, gun forts were built at five main approaches to the city, one of them at Bajing Terrace. The State Council placed the wall on the national list of key protected heritage sites in 1996, and the city government calls it the best-preserved Song brick city wall in China.
