About Geyuan Fujian-Zhejiang-Jiangxi Revolutionary Sites
Fang Zhimin, Shao Shiping and Huang Dao founded the base here, and Mao Zedong later praised it as a base of the Fang Zhimin type. The central government of the Chinese Soviet Republic awarded the province the title of Model Soviet, and the town is referred to as the red provincial capital. Geyuan is a Chinese Historic and Cultural Town, and the scenic area formed around the sites is a national 4A area, a provincial scenic area, a national patriotic-education base and one of the national classic red-tourism areas.
The remains are numerous rather than singular. The area holds one national key cultural heritage protection unit made up of six separate points, together with more than fifty protected sites at provincial and county level. Several of the principal buildings stand at Fenglin Village within the town, so a visit means moving between separate compounds rather than entering a single museum.
What to look for
- The former site of the CPC Min-Zhe-Gan Provincial Committee at Fenglin Village, a walled compound of 1,000 square metres whose single-row buildings held the secretariat, organisation, propaganda, women's and white-area work departments
- The couplet written on either side of that compound's gate, about carrying out the party's offensive line and smashing the enemy's fifth encirclement
- The small courtyard inside the gate, planted with banana
- The former provincial military-region headquarters, also at Fenglin Village: 700 square metres, two ranks of buildings around a light well, twelve rooms including the political department, commissar's room, commander's room and offices
- The wider group of protected sites, one national key unit of six points plus more than fifty provincial and county-level sites
