About Longgong Cave

The scenic area lies about 60 kilometres from the city of Jiujiang and holds the national AAAA rating. Its components are the cave group of Longgongdong, Yuhudong and Yuxiandong, the temple site at Xianzhenyan, a forest park and the Linglong Huagu flower valley, so the catalogue name refers to one cave within a larger complex rather than to the whole. Longgongdong itself runs 1,600 metres, a karst passage whose dissolution the county government attributes to the Palaeozoic Cambrian, and it holds a steady temperature of around 18 degrees Celsius through the year, with stalactites hanging from the roof and stalagmites rising from the floor.

Yuhudong is divided into a dry passage of 500 metres and a water passage of 700 metres, the second of which is travelled by boat. Yuxiandong is a narrower passage running up towards the hilltop, and large numbers of bats hang near its entrance. Above the caves at Xianzhenyan stands the Longxian temple, which the county government dates to 227 CE. The Linglong Huagu section covers more than two thousand mu and is planted as flower fields. Pengze itself is an old county on the Yangtze, remembered as the place where the poet Tao Yuanming served as magistrate.
