About Shangbao Rice Terraces
Chongyi County lies where Jiangxi, Guangdong and Hunan meet, on the eastern flank of the Luoxiao range; forest covers 88.3 per cent of its 2,207.7 square kilometres, and land above 500 metres makes up nearly half of it. Shangbao Township sits in the west of the county about 50 kilometres from the county town, adjoining Rucheng and Guidong counties in Hunan, and covers 147 square kilometres with ten administrative villages and some 13,700 people. The county records the terraces here as the site of a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System recognised by the Food and Agriculture Organization, and describes them as the largest Hakka terraces in China and one of the country's three major terrace systems. They are also a national AAAA tourist attraction and a national water conservancy scenic area, with Shuinan village at their core listed as a provincial key rural tourism village.
The terraces are worked ground rather than a set piece, and the county pairs them with a farming calendar of events, including a harvest festival with paddy-fish catching and rice-planting contests, and performances of the three-section dragon, the spring ox dance and Hakka wedding customs. The same township has a separate historical association: in October and November 1927 Zhu De and Chen Yi led surviving units of the Nanchang Uprising in the Shangbao training, one of three reorganisations carried out in southern Jiangxi that autumn.
