About Taoxichuan Ceramic Art District

The first phase was built around the former Yuzhou Porcelain Factory, with the stated purpose of protecting and reusing ceramic industrial heritage. Rather than clearing the plant, the scheme kept its sawtooth-roofed workshop sheds, its tall chimneys and water towers, the old coal-fired kilns and even the painted slogans on the walls. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism placed the project among national key projects for distinctive cultural industry in 2015 and on the first list of ten national cultural industry demonstration parks eligible for creation.

Two museums anchor the site. The art museum has eight exhibition halls and a lecture hall, with a total display area of 6,000 square metres that includes an 81-metre tunnel kiln retained and displayed in place. The Jingdezhen Ceramic Industrial Heritage Museum is described as the first museum in China devoted specifically to ceramic industrial heritage; in November 2017 it received a UNESCO Asia-Pacific heritage conservation award and was entered on the first national industrial heritage list of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the first Chinese industrial heritage protection list of the China Association for Science and Technology. Its display runs from 1904 to 2010 in four sections, drawing on tools, equipment, kilns and products, oral histories recorded from 500 workers and the personnel files of 69,000 porcelain workers.
