About Yuan Dynasty Blue-and-White Porcelain Museum
The find produced 239 Yuan-dynasty objects. Among them were nineteen blue-and-white vessels and four pieces of underglaze-red porcelain, which the municipal government describes as exceptionally rare examples of Yuan work. Gao'an states that the resulting museum collection ranks third in the world and first in China for the number of Yuan blue-and-white pieces held. The hoard is the first of the three things Gao'an names as its treasures, alongside its tea-picking opera and its calligraphy.
The porcelain did not arrive in a city without a ceramic past. Gao'an has made everyday and decorative wares since the Song dynasty. The city itself is old: founded in 201 BCE as Jiancheng, one of eighteen counties of Yuzhang commandery, it was renamed Gao'an during the Tang to avoid the personal name of the crown prince Li Jiancheng. Gao'an lies about 42 kilometres west of Nanchang.
What to look for
- The nineteen blue-and-white vessels from the 1980 hoard, the core of the collection
- The four underglaze-red porcelains found with them
- The hoard as a group of 239 Yuan objects from a single Gao'an deposit, rather than pieces assembled from the trade
- The local ceramic tradition the find sits within, since Gao'an has produced everyday and decorative wares since the Song
