About Koguryo Heritage Sites in Ji’an
Ji’an’s Koguryo heritage brings together remains of capital cities and royal and noble tombs. The plains around the modern city and the nearby mountains served different but connected purposes. Guonei City and Wandu Mountain City are central to understanding how this early kingdom organised its capital landscape.
The UNESCO property includes sites in both Jilin and Liaoning. Ji’an contains Guonei, Wandu and important tomb groups, while Wunu Mountain City is a separate component in Liaoning. The tombs include contrasting construction forms and evidence of mural traditions; this does not mean that every decorated chamber is open for visitors to enter.
Use a site map to compare the lowland city with the defensive mountain setting before focusing on individual tombs. Stone-built monuments, earthen mounds and excavated foundations each communicate different kinds of evidence. A useful visit distinguishes what survives in place from photographs, replicas or interpretation explaining fragile interiors.
What to look for
- Compare Guonei City with the mountain setting of Wandu.
- Look at the different forms of royal and noble tombs.
- Distinguish original remains from interpretation of closed interiors.
