About Lushun Russo-Japanese Prison Museum

Construction began in 1902, and Japan took over the prison after occupying Lüshun in 1905. Its prisoners included Chinese detainees, Korean and Japanese opponents of war, and American airmen. The Korean independence activist An Jung-geun was imprisoned and executed here.

The cells and workshops show different parts of the prison system. A Palace Museum research team recorded prison rules displayed in Japanese, Korean and Chinese during its 2016 visit. Workshops inside the compound were used for forced labour, producing clothing, footwear, printed materials and other supplies for the colonial authorities.

What to look for

  • The prison cells, with the multilingual rules recorded by the Palace Museum research team.
  • The workshop buildings that formed part of the prison's forced-labour system.
