About Wanfotang Grottoes

Wanfotang Grottoes are Buddhist cave monuments at the foot of Fushan in Yixian County, within the Jinzhou region. They occupy a south-facing cliff near the Daling River. Excavation began in the Northern Wei period, with the dated beginnings of the complex placed in 499.

The caves are arranged in eastern and western groups. Their architecture and carved surfaces show how a Buddhist interior could be created within a rock face. The provincial heritage description highlights the ceiling designs in western caves, including caves two and five, as useful evidence of regional artistic and architectural expression.

Begin with the position of the cave openings along the cliff, then study the ceiling and wall organisation in whichever chambers are open. Surviving carving needs to be read alongside areas of loss, weathering and conservation. The name suggests a multitude of Buddhas, but the significance of the site lies in its dated surviving fabric and regional context rather than a literal count of visible figures.

What to look for

  • Compare the eastern and western cave groups.
  • Look for the carved ceiling organisation in open chambers.
  • Relate the cliff setting to the nearby Daling River landscape.
