About Zhangzi Island
Zhangzi Island (獐子岛) lies in the southern part of the Changshan Islands (长山群岛), in the Yellow Sea 56 nautical miles northeast of Dalian (大连), Liaoning. It is governed by Zhangzidao Town (獐子岛镇) in Changhai County (长海县).
Changhai County is made up of 142 islands, islets and reefs known together as the Outer Changshan Islands (外长山列岛), and is the only island county in Northeast China. Zhangzi Island sits close to the 39th parallel north. Its coastline runs for 57.7 km, winding in and out, with reefs and rocks alternating along the shore. Three other islands lie nearby: Dalian (褡裢), Dahao (大耗) and Xiaohao (小耗). East and West Dalian Island are only 400 m apart and are linked by a sandbar called Beilanzi (北岚子); a causeway carrying a concrete road was built between them in 1972. Dahaozi Island (大耗子岛), 5.4 km east of Zhangzi, rises to 162.1 m at its southwestern end.
The waters around Zhangzi are known for high-value seafood: wrinkled abalone (皱纹盘鲍), scallops, sea snails, sea urchins, purple Washington clam (紫石房蛤) and hermit crabs. Zhangzi Island abalone, sea cucumber and Yesso scallop are each registered as Chinese geographical indication products. For visitors the island has a large bathing beach at Golden Sand Beach (金沙滩) and a holiday village, and a seawater desalination plant was built to meet the needs of visitors.
In the island's southeast lies the Eagle Beak Rock scenic area (鹰嘴石景区), covering about 100,000 m². Its namesake rock stands on the shore and is named for its resemblance to the head of a hawk.
