About Moorish Barracks
Pale yellow walls, white detailing and pointed arches give the building a different character from nearby Chinese temples and houses. The long verandas respond to the climate while framing views along the hillside. Built for troops from Goa, it now serves the Marine and Water Bureau. Plan a visit around the exterior and publicly accessible veranda; the presence of government offices does not mean the whole building is a museum.
What to look for
- Pointed arches form a repeated rhythm along the wide verandas.
- The heavy granite platform contrasts with the pale yellow plaster and white ornament above.
