About Museum of the Holy House of Mercy
The Museum of the Holy House of Mercy introduces the history of one of Macao’s longstanding charitable institutions. It is associated with the white neoclassical building beside Senado Square, with museum access from the adjoining lane. Its subject is the relationship between religious life, charity and the city’s communities.
The institution was founded in 1569 by Bishop Melchior Carneiro and became involved in hospitals and other forms of care. The museum, opened in 2001, presents religious and historical objects connected with that work. Documents and ceremonial material give the charitable organisation a more specific identity than the elegant facade alone reveals.
Read the institutional history before focusing on individual objects. A document, religious image or donated item becomes more meaningful when its role in the organisation is explained. Then return to the exterior to connect the collection with its prominent civic setting. The museum is a compact visit, suited to careful attention to a few objects rather than a long sequence of unrelated galleries.
What to look for
- Connect historical documents and objects with charitable work.
- Compare the museum interior with the building’s public facade.
