About Huaibei City Museum

The canal exhibition reconstructs aspects of the archaeological site and connects shipping with the movement of ceramics and other goods. A separate Han stone-relief collection reveals another regional tradition through carved tomb imagery. The building brings these themes together in a modern city shaped by mining, making the museum a useful introduction before a separate journey to the outlying canal remains.

Huaibei Museum originated in 1973, when the city government funded the restoration of Xiantong Temple (显通寺); the building was converted into a museum in 1976, with its name inscribed by Guo Moruo (郭沫若). The former temple was listed as an Anhui provincial cultural relic protection unit (安徽省文物保护单位) in 1989. In 1999, the discovery of the Liuzi Canal site (柳孜运河遗址) in Suixi County later became a central subject of the museum's collection.

Construction of a new museum building, designed by Qi Kang (齐康), began in August 2001 and the building opened in September 2004. In 2009, to support the protection and UNESCO nomination of the Grand Canal, the museum added the additional name Sui-Tang Grand Canal Museum (隋唐大运河博物馆), inscribed by Luo Zhewen (罗哲文). It now holds the status of a National First-Grade Museum (国家一级博物馆).
