About Jingting Mountain
Poetry is central to its identity: Xie Tiao and Li Bai are among the writers strongly associated with the mountain.
The wooded hill group includes Cuiyun Peak. The literary tradition continued through later visitors, while Guangjiao Temple at the foot of the mountain was associated with the painter Shitao. A route combining the lower cultural setting and a selected hill path gives both strands room.
Jingting Mountain rises beside the Shuiyang River (水阳江) in the northern suburbs of Xuancheng, as a spur of the Huangshan range running southwest to northeast. It comprises 60 large and small peaks, with three main summits – Yifeng (一峰), Jingfeng (净峰) and Cuiyun Peak (翠云峰) – the last being the highest, at 324.1 meters.
The mountain was originally called Zhaoting Mountain (昭亭山), renamed Jingting Mountain in the Western Jin dynasty to avoid the naming taboo of Emperor Wen of Jin, Sima Zhao (司马昭). Thousands of poems, essays and paintings have been devoted to it over the centuries, earning it the name 'Mountain of Poetry South of the Yangtze.' Later visitors following Xie Tiao and Li Bai included Bai Juyi, Du Mu, Ouyang Xiu, Huang Tingjian, Su Shi and Wen Tianxiang; Han Yu, one of the 'Eight Great Prose Masters of the Tang and Song,' also resided at the mountain, and a later Changli Villa (昌黎别业) commemorates him.
