Sanhe, Feixi County 三河古镇

Sanhe Guzhen

Sanhe developed where the Fengle, Hangbu and Xiaonan rivers meet, and its old streets still reveal that water-borne trading layout.

About Sanhe, Feixi County

The lanes lead between bridges, shopfronts and former merchants’ premises. Liu Tong Xing Long Zhuang interprets the town’s commercial life through the setting of an old business, while the narrow Yiren Lane adds a more domestic scale. River views and buildings work together here, so leave room to follow a short section of the waterfront between visits.

Historically known as Quezhu, Queyi, Que'an or Sancha (鹊渚, 鹊尾, 鹊岸, 三汊), Sanhe was the site of the Battle of Sanhe (三河大捷) in 1858, when Taiping forces defeated the Xiang Army during the Taiping Rebellion. The People's Liberation Army occupied the town in January 1949; it was briefly organized as a county and then a county-level city named Sanhe City under Chaohu prefecture, before being abolished in 1950 and merged into Feixi County. The former Sanhe district was converted into a town in January 1956.

Sanhe was named one of China's historic and cultural towns (中国历史文化名镇) in May 2007 and rated a national 5A-level tourist attraction (国家5A级旅游景区) in October 2015; in 2004 the site of the battle and the town's old residences had been listed among the fifth batch of Anhui provincial cultural heritage protection units (安徽省文物保护单位). After 2000 the town also developed tourism around sites including the former residence of Yang Zhenning (杨振宁旧居) and He Lu (鹤庐).
