About Shouxian Ancient City
The walls were rebuilt through the Song period and repeatedly repaired under the Ming and Qing. Their outer face rises in brick and stone, while the inner side forms an earthen slope. Enclosed spaces behind the gates provide a second defensive line; at offset entrances, a rush of water meets a wall before it can strike the inner gate directly.
Water management continues beneath the streets. Ponds and channels carry rainwater toward outlets under the city wall. The yueba drainage structures use a wooden stopper that opens under pressure from inside and closes when the water outside rises. Numbered stones for blocking the gates preserve another practical part of the old city’s flood defences.
