About White Pagoda Temple · Miaoying Temple
White Pagoda Temple (白塔寺), formally Miaoying Temple, stands on Fuchengmen Inner Street in Beijing's Xicheng District. Its white Tibetan-style stupa is a landmark inherited from the Yuan-period capital of Dadu.
The stupa is associated with the Nepalese architect Arniko and the cross-cultural building traditions of the Yuan court. The broad white body, tiered upper structure and surrounding temple halls create a distinctive profile. Look first from the approach, then from the courtyards: the close view reveals proportions and details that are less visible from the surrounding lanes.
The temple and the neighbouring hutongs can form a compact architectural walk, with the stupa appearing above the residential roofs from different angles. This is the Miaoying Temple monument, distinct from the white stupa in Beihai Park. The Chinese name 白塔寺 and Xicheng address are therefore useful when searching maps; a search for white pagoda alone can lead to another landmark.
