About China National Botanical Garden
China National Botanical Garden (国家植物园) lies at the foot of Beijing's Western Hills in Haidian District. It combines the South Garden, associated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Botany, and the North Garden, formerly Beijing Botanical Garden.
Its purpose extends beyond ornamental planting to plant conservation, research, horticulture and public education. Outdoor collections and conservatories offer different ways to compare plants and their environments. The North Garden also contains places such as Wofo Temple and the Cao Xueqin memorial area, allowing botanical interests to be combined with cultural stops.
The two gardens should be treated as separate areas in a single larger institution. Choose which collections or buildings matter to you, then identify the appropriate gate and route. Trying to cover both without a plan can turn a plant-focused visit into a long transfer between highlights. Flowers and foliage change with the season; a named species in a collection does not mean it will be in flower on your visit.
