About Chaotianmen

The public square gives an open view of waterborne traffic and the banks facing the city, including the Grand Theatre. Raffles City rises immediately behind the waterfront, adding a modern backdrop to the river-port setting. The main activity is to watch the confluence from different edges of the square, then look back at the towers from the water side.

A city gate was built at the site in the early Ming dynasty and was named Chaotianmen because it faced Nanjing, then the imperial capital. When Chongqing opened as a treaty port in 1891, a customs house was set up here. The gate was pulled down in 1927 to make way for a dock, leaving only the base of the old city wall. In 2015 sections of Song and Ming dynasty city wall were uncovered at the site but were destroyed soon afterward, since the site lay within the Raffles City Chongqing (重庆来福士广场) construction area.

Chaotianmen lies at the northeastern tip of Yuzhong District at the meeting point of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, on ground bordered by water on three sides and higher in the middle. Long, steep stone steps, though rebuilt over time, still link the upper part of the city to the riverside docks below.

Chaotianmen is now an important passenger dock, with boats to Fuling, Wanzhou and Yichang, hydrofoils and tour boats, serving as one of the starting points for Three Gorges river cruises. From Chaotianmen Square, the green Jialing River can be seen flowing into the brownish-yellow Yangtze. Raffles City Chongqing (重庆来福士广场), built at the site, opened in September 2019, and Chaotianmen Station on rail transit Line 1 opened in December 2020.
