About Chongkan Rapeseed Flower Fields
Around 2006 the local government began encouraging and subsidising farmers along the Qiong River in Chongkan town to plant rapeseed in concentrated blocks, aiming to hold a flower festival; the first Chongkan rapeseed flower festival opened in spring 2008 after two years of preparation and drew over ten thousand visitors. In 2009 a people.com.cn national poll named the scenic area one of 'China's most beautiful rapeseed flower seas', and in 2010 it was named one of Chongqing's ten spring tourism destinations. The scenic area was approved as a national AAA-grade tourist attraction in 2017 and upgraded to AAAA-grade at the end of 2020; Tongnan District's own overview describes it as 'China's most beautiful flower sea'.
Local legend holds that the Song-dynasty scholar Chen Tuan was born in Chongkan town and lived to 118, giving the scenic area its 'Chen Tuan's Hometown' name and Chen Tuan Mountain within it. Tongnan District has a long history of grain and oil-crop cultivation and was designated a National Rapeseed Seed-Production County in 2022; in early spring more than 300,000 mu of rapeseed flowers bloom across the district as a whole. In recent festivals the scenic area has interplanted colour rapeseed varieties with wheat to form a Taiji (yin-yang) diagram some 236 metres across, and visitors can view the flowers from the water along the Qiong River, on foot among the fields, from the slopes of Chen Tuan Mountain, or from the air; a sightseeing train also runs visitors through the flower sea during the festival.
