About Chongqing Nanshan Botanical Garden

The garden belongs to the International Association of Botanic Gardens and to Botanic Gardens Conservation International, is a member of the China Botanical Garden Association and sits on the council of the Chinese Union of Botanical Gardens. It was included in Chongqing's first group of National Key Parks and is designated a National Popular Science Education Base. Its stated remit covers species security in southwest China, the introduction and domestication of important plants, the protection and use of plant resources, and public science and environmental education; the district's page describes it as the only national germplasm resource bank base for Sichuan camellia in southwest China.

Eighteen specialist gardens are planned. Nine have been built, along with a display glasshouse: the rose garden, the camellia garden — which carries the International Excellence in Camellia Garden title — the orchid garden, the penjing garden, the plum garden, the Jinying garden, the Yikeshu viewing park, the central landscape garden and the medicinal plant garden. More than a thousand kinds of Chinese and foreign flowers are grown, with ten singled out by name: camellia, cherry, white champaca, rhododendron, plum, orchid, crabapple, osmanthus, lotus and dahlia. The Nan’an district government sets out a four-season pattern of flowers in spring, cool air in summer, osmanthus in autumn and plum in winter, and records that Nanshan zui hua is counted among the twelve new scenes of Bayu.
