About Pingliuwei Geopark

Pingliuwei Geopark (平流尾地质公园) is a seaside geological park on the coast of Lianjiang County (连江县), at Jiaonan Village (茭南村) of Tailu Town (苔菉镇), in Fuzhou (福州). Its main feature is a shoreline shaped by wave erosion.

The park is laid out around a huge, flat volcanic rock that local people call Pingliuwei. The rock sits at the tail end (尾) of Jiaonan Village and divides the shore, so that the sea runs fast on one side and slack on the other, which is how it got its name. Long wave action along this coast has cut cliffs, wave-cut platforms (海蚀平台), sea caves (海蚀岩洞) and narrow sea-worn channels (海蚀巷道). Between the jagged rocks lie deep gullies and hollows where fish and shellfish shelter, and a number of large boulders with striking shapes stand along the shore.

The villagers of Jiaonan raised the money for the park themselves. Building began in September 2015; phase one was complete by October 2016. In August 2016 Fujian's provincial ocean and fisheries department (福建省海洋与渔业厅) picked it for the province's first batch of coastal parks (海岸公园). Built facilities include viewing platforms, a campsite, sea-fishing platforms, a square for cultural and sports events, an interactive activity hall for parents and children, and a car park.

Visitors follow a wooden boardwalk and undulating rocky paths; from the clifftops they watch waves break close by while the open sea beyond is calm and wide. People also come here to camp, go sea fishing and spend the day with children.
