About Temple of the Emperor Guantai of Dongshan

The compact temple is dedicated to Guan Yu and is arranged along an axis of gateway, middle hall and principal hall. Its architectural decoration rewards close inspection: broken porcelain is assembled into colourful roof ornaments, while carved wood and painted surfaces enrich the interiors.

The temple also has a history of religious connections with Taiwan. A focused visit can follow the hall sequence while comparing the different materials used by local craftspeople.

Construction began in the twentieth year of the Ming dynasty's Hongwu era (洪武), in 1387. The temple was expanded in the third year of Zhengde (正德), in 1508, and rebuilt in the nineteenth year of Kangxi (康熙), in 1680. It occupies 680 square metres at the eastern foot of Hulou Mountain (岵嵝山), with its main axis oriented from northwest to southeast. In 1996, it entered the fourth group of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位). It is also known as Tongling Guandimiao and Tongling Wumiao.

What to look for

  • The roof’s colourful cut-porcelain ornamentation.
  • Gilded woodcarving, lacquered decoration and stone carving around the halls.
